Where Habitat Serves

Prince Edward County

A New Place to Call Home

On Sunday, April 3, 2016, the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity held a groundbreaking ceremony on Andrews Drive in Farmville to mark the beginning of their newest home build.  Many friends and family joined in the celebration with Lisa Scott-Hicks, who is working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and USDA Rural Development to achieve her dream of becoming a homeowner.  When asked how the idea of having her own home made her feel, Mrs. Scott-Hicks responded, “It will give me more options.  I feel like I will have a place to call my own.”  As a Habitat partner family, she is putting in her “sweat equity” where she will work alongside volunteers to build her home and to assist with other local Habitat projects.  Of course, helping others is nothing new for Mrs. Scott-Hicks.  For many years, she has served the families of this community as a special education instructional aide at Prince Edward County Schools.  One family member noted how Mrs. Scott-Hicks is a blessing to others and how God is blessing her with this new home.
